The Understated Matrix vs. Sensory Presence

In 2007, Peter Zumthor curated a comprehensive retrospective of his buildings and projects spanning two decades within his own iconic concrete monolith. The curatorial concept, developed by Zumthor alongside curator Thomas Durisch, reduced the technical display apparatus to the absolute limit of perceptibility to amplify the physical-psychological experience of space and material.
Operating strictly within the rigorous corporate identity framework established by Clemens Theobert Schedler, the assignment for Stefan Gaßner and Bernd Altenried was to devise an editorial and spatial infrastructure that functioned not as an addition to the architecture, but as its direct typographical extension. Every printed element and spatial text-block was discussed, reviewed, and finalized in personal sessions directly with Peter Zumthor.

The system centers on a strict sequence of two editorial formats. The invitation booklet establishes an atmospheric pre-attunement using raw imagery of Zumthor’s work, while the exhibition booklet acts as a straight, unembellished list of works. Inside, every plan is superimposed onto a unified, blue-tinted master grid of the KUB floor plan, consistently oriented northward and scaled to an identical metric. This layout serves as a clear guide, mapping the physical trajectory across the floors and mirroring the real-time film installations by Nicole Six and Paul Petritsch.

The spatial typography extends onto thick architectural tracing paper, specifically formatted to match the dimensions of the frosted glass facade panels. These high-density sheets, charting 35 structures, were layered between non-reflective glass plates or placed flat on long worktables alongside original sketches and raw building materials. The documentation is completed by unedited press sheets from the physical ink-matching sessions, anchoring the entire system within the rigor of industrial lithography and production precision.
