The Tectonic Grid vs. Political Emergency

In July 2011, the Kunsthaus Bregenz realized a solo exhibition focusing entirely on Ai Weiwei’s architectural collaborations. During the preparation phase, the artist was detained by Chinese authorities and his brick studio complex in Shanghai was demolished by the state. Operating strictly within the corporate design framework established by Clemens Theobert Schedler, the spatial communication instantly transformed into an infrastructure of solidarity. The editorial system focuses strictly on the typographic grid of the official exhibition booklet (Ausstellungsheft) and the invitation suite (Einladungsheft). The layout incorporates original engineering matrices by Herzog & de Meuron and functions as a permanent, tactile record of an architectonic manifestation under political emergency.
